Lesson 5
We will begin by pre-teaching the lesson's vocabulary by explaining and giving examples of the terms. Students will create and complete a foldable similar to the graphic organizer (IR-12 or fold-able). The information to complete the foldable comes from the IR-13 reading. We will discuss the key concepts in class and clarify/verify. Students take additional notes in their journal and will put the fold-able in their journal. We will then review and answer EQ's 1 and 3.
On day two, we will begin by reviewing examples of formal, functional, and perceptual. A whole class discussion will follow over the similarities and differences of each. formal region (like Texas), functional region (like our high school), and a perceptual region (like the 'Deep South'). We will then discuss and answer EQ 2.

Formal Region
Functional Region
Perceptual Region
A Perceptual Region is NOT a clearly defined area. It may differ from person to person, depending on their perspective. A perceptual region is usually formed by grouping some sort of similarity or connection from the surrounding area but there is no clearly defined border. For example, the 'Deep South'. This is a region of the lower, eastern United States famous for soul food and gospel and/or rap music. However, it is possible for every person to define where the Dirty South is differently, or even not recognize it at all!
