Preparing to Learn. Students will work in pairs to sketch a map between two places which they are familiar. Suggestions for maps can be but are not limited to: maps of their routes to school, neighborhood, city, or places they like to visit. After completing the map, students will share their map with a different group. Students will analyze the map and compare it to the one they created; how is it similar, how is it different? As a class, we will discuss:
What specific things did you include on your map?
What things did you omit?
Guided Practice. Still in groups, students will organize different maps into categories based on common characteristics. Students will create names for these categories. Questions to guide your organization are: are there any similarities between the maps? What are the parts of the map that may be used in the maps?
Reading to Learn. Students will individually read IR-9 and complete notes in their journal, (see IR-8 for notes setup). After completing notes, students should review the acronym, TODALSIGSS, on the last page of IR-9. Students will be using the TODALSIGSS acronym to check for map components throughout their high curriculum, and this course!
Analyze and Evaluate. Students will return to their map creation partners to review their original map. They should make all necessary changes to to include the TODALSIGSS in their final product. It will be graded based on the TODALSIGSS!
