Lesson 5 Map Projections
Preparing to Learn. Students will turn to a partner to discuss what kind of map would be used in these 3 scenarios: Driving to Disney World in Orlando, FL; an airplane flying from Dallas, TX to Tokyo, Japan; and an oil tanker sailing from the Middle East to Houston, TX. We will then discuss these scenarios as a class.
Guided Practice. In groups of about 3, students will analyze various map projection types. Students will complete these sentence stems:
Two things that are similar between the two maps are...
One thing that is different about the maps is...
As a class we will clarify and verify student answers and discuss how the maps are distorted.
Reading to Learn. Students will work individually to complete a KIM chart using lesson vocabulary. After students have completed the KIM chart we will review the differences between the three types of map projections, which type of map is best for different types of travel, the limitations of using a globe, and other types of uses for GIS and satellite images.
Analyze. Individually students will list all the items a school board would want to layer into a GIS projection for the best location for a new high school. Things to include might be: types of soil, current/future average income of nearby residents, demographics, and business in the proposed zone.
Evaluate. Students will individually complete these items:
An azimuthal map projection would most likely be used by ______________. because of the mathematical calculations needed in identifying the shortest route between two locations.
Complete a Venn Diagram that lists 3 differences for Maps and Globes and 2 similarities.
