Lesson 1: Urbanization
Today, students will take notes on vocabulary in the PowerPoint and read to learn about the process of urban developments (IR-4). A focus from the reading will be explaining the difference between Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA) and Combined Statistical Area (CSA). Students will gain this expertise by looking at the neighborhoods that create Houston MSA and then by comparing Houston and Dallas CSAs. Finally, we will discuss and take notes on megacities and map the top 10 megacities in the world. We will provide spatial analysis of these megacities by comparing their locations, climates, social factors, and more.
Megacities are cities that have grown and grown to incorporate surrounding areas. They have extremely high populations, highly organized infrastructures, and a tremendous amount off variances in businesses and jobs. Notice how megacities can expand as far as the eye can see.Combined Statistical Areas can eventually lead to becoming a megacity.
